BIRMINGHAM — A shooting near Trussville at Edwards Lake Road and Gadsden Highway is connected to a Birmingham homicide on Saturday, according to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade of the Birmingham Police Department.
At approximately 1:33 p.m. East Precinct officers were dispatched to a call of a motor vehicle accident in the 9300 Block of Parkway East, according to Wade.
“Officers arrived on the scene and observed the victim suffering from what appeared to be injuries caused by the motor vehicle accident,” Wade said. “Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital. UAB medical staff determined that the victim had sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound.”
The victim has been identified as Stephen A. Keith Jr., 77, of Birmingham. Keith was pronounced deceased at 9:44 p.m.
“The preliminary investigation suggests that at approximately 1:31 p.m., East Precinct officers received a BOLO from our 911 Communications Division of a male firing shots at another vehicle near Edwards Lake Road and Gadsden Highway,” Wade said. “Minutes later, several calls were received stating matching call details in the 9300 Block of Parkway East.”
After Keith was struck by gunfire on Parkway East, his vehicle collided with a pickup truck.
The driver of the pickup truck was also transported to UAB Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services.
Trussville Police Lt. Clint Riner said that TPD was notified of the incident by Birmingham police and asked to divert traffic from Edwards Lake Road while the suspect was apprehended at Tom Bradford Park.
