BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department announced an arrest on Wednesday in the weekend murder of a 26-year-old Birmingham man in east Birmingham.
The department stated on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, that it has arrested Cordarius Elliot, 28, and charged him with capital murder in the death of Jacqkingman Bennett, 26, of Birmingham. Elliot was placed in the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said that Bennett’s death is a result of a gunshot wound sustained in an assault.
Birmingham Police Department Sgt. Rod Mauldin said that East Precinct officers responded to the location following a call of an unresponsive person around 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2020, on 88 Street North and 14th Avenue North in east Birmingham.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered Bennett suffering from a gunshot wound lying on the ground. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and subsequently pronounced Bennett dead.
