CENTER POINT — Thanks to the charitable contributions of Jefferson County President Pro-Tem Commissioner Lashunda Scales, the Cathedral of the Cross A.O.H. Church of God, along with volunteers, families in Birmingham received fresh produce during a Monday afternoon giveaway in Center Point.
The giveaway, hosted by Center Point’s Cathedral of the Cross A.O.H. Church, provided 1,000 boxes of free fresh produce to families who arrived to the drive-thru event on Monday from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
“I cannot say thank you enough for ForestWood Farm, in conjunction with AOH Cathedral of the Cross Bishop Phillip Wright,” Scales said. “I can’t say thank you enough that we all came together to make sure that our communities are feed and that they are fed with fresh fruit and vegetables.”
Each family received a 20 lb. box of free fruits and vegetables from Forestwood Farm, which is a locally owned business that sells fresh produce, vegetables, eggs, milk and other dairy products to restaurants, schools and military facilities in the Southeast.
The event drew hundreds of families from throughout eastern Jefferson County. Lines of masked volunteers waved cars through and loaded the boxes of oranges, squash, potatoes and other assorted produce into vehicles that snaked around the church.
“You and I, working together, we will be that change that we both want to see,” Scales said.
