AUBURN — According to multiple reports, Auburn has fired head football coach Gus Malzahn after eight seasons with the program.
Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will step in as the Tigers’ interim head coach.
Malzahn’s final season ended at 6-4 with losses against Alabama, Texas A&M, South Carolina and Georgia. Overall, Malzahn went 68-35 at Auburn.
He is set to collect a $21.45 million buyout, according to USA Today.
“After evaluating the state of the Auburn football program, we’ve decided that it was time to make a change in leadership,” read a statement from Auburn Director of Athletics Allen Green. “We appreciate everything that Gus did for the program over the last eight seasons. We will begin a search immediately for a coach that can help the Auburn program consistently compete at the highest level.”
