ATLANTA — Hewitt-Trussville High School (HTHS) joined 271 top high school quiz bowl teams from 34 states at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis for the 2022 High School National Championship Tournament on Saturday, May 28, to determine who was the best.
HTHS was one of 14 Alabama teams competing in the national championship and finished the preliminary rounds with a 5-5 record.
They were on the brink of elimination when they defeated Ward Melville from East Setauket, New York, in round 18 to stay alive. Unfortunately, they lost to Bellaire from Texas, ending their shot at the playoffs.

Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students, and those teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports, and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subjects.
The team was captained by Juliana Eberhardt, who was joined by Wei Wei Guo, Laura Phillips, Sarah Prince, and Katherine Spusta. Josh Haynes coached the team.
The tournament champion was the A team from Detroit Catholic Central High School of Novi, Michigan.
