BIRMINGHAM – The Training and Organizational Development Department of the Personnel Board of Jefferson County announced on Sept. 23, 2022, that 142 individual Merit System employees have successfully completed certificate programs. Among the certificate recipients are Chief Tim Shotts and Lt. Matthew Panepento of the Trussville Fire Department (TPD), and Chief Eric Rush and Constance Watkins of the Trussville Police Department (TPD).
Seventy-eight employees completed the Leading People Certificate, 76 completed the Leading Processes Certificate, 56 completed the Professional Development Certificate, 10 completed the Civil Servant Leadership Certificate, and six completed the On-Deck Leadership Certificate, for a total of 226 certificates among 142 individual employees.
The recipients were recognized at a celebration on Friday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m., at the Historic Boutwell Auditorium. The keynote speaker was Concetta Lewis, Vice President of Talent Development for Daxko.
Training and developing the Merit System employees is a key driver for the Personnel Board of Jefferson County.
“These programs are great tools that enable our supervisors and future supervisors from across the Merit System to enhance their leadership and computer skills” said Jeff Crenshaw, Interim Director of the Personnel Board of Jefferson County. “We are very proud of the time and effort that this class has applied towards their goals, and we are hopeful that their accomplishments will have a positive effect on their jurisdictions.”
The Leading People Certificate program is designed for current and aspiring supervisors to develop the necessary skills to lead the people on their team. This program covers topics such as communication skills, the art of delegation, and conflict resolution, and it is essential for those who have the desire to move from manager to leader.
The Managing Processes Certificate program focuses on the crucial decisions that a manager must make to ensure work is accomplished. Sessions cover topics such as strategic planning, critical thinking, and project management. After completing this program, attendees will have learned the skills needed to be a strategic leader in local government.
The Professional Development Certificate program focuses on helping employees be the best possible employee they can be. Sessions cover topics such as personal branding, networking, professionalism, and public speaking. Employees successfully completing this program will have a solid foundation to build upon as they continue their career path in local government.
The Civil Servant Leadership Certificate program lasts 16 weeks and consists of classroom-based learning, e-learning, assigned readings, group discussions, a service project, and a final presentation. It allows participants to understand and apply their prior learnings, while also discovering how the concept of servant leadership can help them achieve success in local government.
The On-Deck Leadership Certificate program is a unique, intensive, and highly interactive experience that serves as a catalyst for newly promoted leaders. This session engages newly promoted leaders through experiential activities, leaderships concepts and exercises, group problem-solving tasks, videos, and lectures. This group received plenty of hands-on practice applying essential leadership concepts to current organizational/personal leadership challenges.
