CENTER POINT – Just a few seasons ago, Center Point had a pretty good thing going on the football field.
Now it’s all losses and armyworms.
In 2011, coach Willie Miller’s Eagles won 11 games and went three games deep into the Class 5A playoffs. In 2013, Bennie Hall took Center Point to a 9-2 season and a 5A playoff berth.
But since then, coinciding with a reassignment to Class 6A, it’s been rough. Hall’s teams went 2-18 over the past two seasons and Shawn Gregory took over as coach this season. The Eagles are 0-6, 0-3 in Region 6, and are riding a 13-game losing streak entering Friday’s game with Walker. Their last win was a 6-0 decision over Woodlawn in September of last season. It kind of seems like rubbing it in to point out that Woodlawn also won just one game, over Class 2A Tarrant – which also won just one game, over Southeastern of Remlap – which also won just one game, over Class 1A Vina.
Well, you get the picture.
But every Friday night is a new opportunity for the Eagles, who are scheduled to host Walker at Bowman Field. We say scheduled because there has been the ongoing problem of armyworm infestation at the Eagles’ football field. Their last home game had to be moved to the visitors stadium. It appears the problem has been resolved for now, and maybe that’s a good omen.
Walker enters with a 2-3 overall record, 0-2 in region play.
The Eagles showed improvement early this season. They lost their first three games by a total of eight points. Then Minor, Clay-Chalkville and Hewitt-Trussville hammered them by a 157-34 margin, and the winners’ starters sat out half of those games.
Depth is the Eagles’ biggest problem, and of course Gregory has to work hard to keep morale up.
After the Clay loss, Gregory said he liked “the way our guys fought. They put it all out there on the table.”
Quarterback Tacoby Trammell has had some good moments, and receivers Chris Baker and Kelvin Cole are fast, athletic and can make plays. The defense has to recover from the past three weeks and give an every-play effort against Walker for a chance to win.
