IRONDALE — A road rage incident on Interstate 20 resulted in gunfire being exchanged on Thursday morning, according to Detective Sergeant Michael Mangina from the Irondale Police Department.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on Interstate 20 westbound before the Interstate 459 south ramp. A Pell City man whose name was not released reported to Irondale Police that he was being harassed by another man who he said had cut him off on the road.
The man reported that this led to the suspect pulling out what appeared to be an AK-47 and fired at him. Mangina said that the weapon he fired was actually a pistol. The man returned fire with his own gun.
After police arrived at the scene they discovered at least nine holes in the man’s car and the passenger side window was shot out. A passenger was riding with him during the incident.
Mangina said that Irondale Police later identified and spoke with with the suspect. The investigation is ongoing and the District Attorney’s Office will be consulted to determine criminal charges.
“It was a ridiculous situation that never should have happened,” Mangina said. “Everyone driving on I-20 this morning is lucky that they didn’t get hit.”
Anyone with information on the suspect is encourage to call the Irondale Police Department at 205-956-5990.
