BIRMINGHAM –The victim of a Saturday afternoon shootout on Interstate 59/20 in east Birmingham has died from his wounds, according to Johnny Williams of the Birmingham police department.
The victim was identified as Edward Tyurri Matthews, 29, of Birmingham.
The latest incident is one of several shootings that have occurred on the Interstates in the metro Birmingham area over the last few years.
Earlier media reports indicated the man had died, but the victim was still alive as of about 10 p.m. on Saturday, according to Williams. His death was confirmed by Birmingham police on Sunday afternoon.
Officers from the East Precinct were called to the 500 block of Oporto-Madrid Boulevard North on a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, the victim was located in the front passenger seat of an SUV unresponsive. The victim had been shot in the head.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and transported the victim to U.A. B. Hospital for treatment.
Officers found that the passengers of the SUV were involved in an altercation with subjects in a gray automobile on Interstate-59 northbound just before the victim was shot and the gray vehicle wrecked. Suspects from the gray vehicle fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival.
On Sunday, investigators were notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators have not established a clear motive in this case at this time. The investigation is still on going.

Last month, a man was shot and killed on Interstate 65 in Homewood.
In June of 2018, gunfire erupted in a road rage incident on I-20 in Irondale.
In July of 2018, a man was shot while traveling in the southbound lane of I-59 near Tallapoosa Street. A second vehicle was also struck by gunfire.
In January of 2018, a man sustained life threatening injuries when he was shot on the Interstate in Birmingham.
In July of 2017, a shooting that began in Birmingham at the I-65 and I-20/59 exchange of Malfunction Junction and continued through Birmingham and Irondale, finally ending near the I-20/59 and I-459 interchange south of Trussville.
In February of 2017, a man was found shot dead in his SUV on Interstate 59.
In June of 2016, one person was killed and another wounded in a shooting on I-59 in Bessemer.
