BIRMINGHAM — The under-construction Interstate 59/20 bridges could open by January 2020.
The Alabama Department of Transportation informed the media on Thursday that the bridges could open to the public as soon as Jan. 21.
Should the bridges open within that suggested deadline, the contractor, Johnson Brothers Corp., would receive a $15 million bonus; however, should the project run past March 21, Johnson Brothers Corp. will be fined $250,000 per day.
The projected cost for the bridges is $750 million.
The project created more than 360 construction jobs. It was paid through a combination of funds from ALDOT, the Federal Highway Administration and the Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization.
