CLAY — The Golden Girls and the UAB Cheerleaders hosted a cheerleading camp for the Clay Youth cheerleading squads from July 14 to July 16 at Clay-Chalkville High School.
“This is our first time to have UAB come, and this is the first year that UAB has done a youth camp,” Clay Youth Cheerleading director Candi McEvoy said.
Clay Youth cheerleaders from pre-K to 6th grade were taught basic sideline cheers from the UAB Cheerleading Squad. The UAB Golden Girls taught each CYC squad their halftime routines.
“It was a really good experience for our girls. It really helped our squad,” McEvoy said.
According to McEvoy, part of the reason that UAB hosted the clinic was because this will be the first season that Clay Youth cheerleading squads will be allowed to stunt and tumble on the sidelines.
“We’re very grateful that they were willing to do this for our city and for our girls,” McEvoy said.
CYC will also be offering tumbling classes, which will meet on Thursdays. While registration for this football season has already closed, registration for basketball season will open shortly.
