BIRMINGHAM – Former Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Smoot was arrested Tuesday.
Smoot is currently in the Jefferson County Jail on charges of resisting arrest and obstructing government operations, according to jail records.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were informed just after noon that there was a disturbance in the family court. Upon further investigation, Smoot’s daughter, Mecca Scarver, was found yelling and disrupting court proceedings. The deputy attempted to calm her, but was unable to do so. Another deputy attempted to escort her out of the courtroom and she refused to go. He advised Scarver that she was under arrest for disorderly conduct.
Scarver fled to the back of the courtroom, where Smoot interfered with the deputy’s attempt to arrest Scarver. The deputy deployed pepper spray and gained control of Scarver.
Once in the patrol car, Scarver slipped out of her handcuffs and began kicking the rear window and doors.
Scarver, 22, is charged with disorderly coudcuct, attempting to elude and escape in the third degree. Her bond is set at $6000.
Smoot, 52, was charged with obstructing government operations and resisting arrest. Her bond totals $1500.
