Scott Allen Pennington, 36, was charged in the murder of 29-year-old Jonathan Carroll. The incident took place on Sunday, July 22 at an access road to a gas well in the 4100 block of Valley Ford Road. Just after 10:30 a.m. Pennington called the sheriff’s office and reported that he had shot and killed Carroll on that road.
Deputies arrived and found Pennington, who took them to the area where Carroll’s body was located.
“Detectives learned that Pennington and Carroll had been riding the dirt roads and had gotten into an argument,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Pennington told them he and Carroll had gotten into an argument and he had shot Carroll in self-defense. Detectives developed evidence that did not support this claim.”
Pennington was taken into custody and transferred to the Jefferson County Jail. On Tuesday, detectives obtained a warrant that charged him in the murder. He remains at the jail on a $75,000 bond.
