LEEDS — He scored both Leeds’ touchdowns last Friday night in a crucial Class 5A, Region 6 win over Center Point.
The Green Wave (6-1, 4-0) slipped into a 14-0 hole in the first quarter and fought to catch back up for the remainder of the game. Junior Rametrius Yelverton eventually ran in the go-ahead touchdown with less than five minutes remaining when he gathered a tipped Jarod Latta pass and took it 37 yards for the win.
“We got lucky there to catch the tipped ball,” Leeds head coach Jerry Hood said. “But you know what? I’ve been on the other side of that. Where someone caught one on me. So, I’m going to take it.”
Yelverton also ran with it 19 times for 101 yards and a touchdown to finish with 154 yards from scrimmage — an output worthy of Tribune Player of the Week honors.
The shifty back has played a vital role on this Green Wave offense, which will try for its seventh consecutive win on Thursday night when St. Clair County comes to town.
