BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is on the scene of an officer-involved shooting in the Titusville area.
The incident happened on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, in the 600 block of Center Place Southwest.
In a press conference, police said officers were responding to a call of shots fired near 5th Avenue Southwest, just after 2 p.m. When the officers arrived, they encountered a suspect who then fled on foot, according to police.
Investigators said the suspect shot several shots at officers and continued running until he got to a porch on Center Place Southwest, where police said he “took a tactical position” and continued to fire at officers. Police shot back, striking the suspect.
No officers were hurt.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue rendered aid to the suspect and took him to the hospital where he died.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is taking the lead in the investigation. A five-block perimeter was put into place and the public was asked to avoid the area.
