BIRMINGHAM — A 60-year-old man drowned after being swept away in floodwaters on Wednesday, March 16, at approximately 3:01 p.m.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Joseva Lawrence Speed, 60, of Birmingham, was a pedestrian swept away by swift-moving water during a flash flood in the 800 block of 24th Street South in Birmingham.
Speed was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, where he was pronounced dead.
“The decedent was walking in the roadway and attempting to get into a family member’s vehicle at the time he was swept away by the water,” Deputy Coroner William Yates said.
