JEFFERSON County — An apartment resident was shot after opening his door, but returned fire killing the assailant, according to Lt. Joni Money of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
“Upon arrival, deputies encountered a 33-year-old and a 42-year-old male both suffering from gunshot wounds,” Money said. “Both were transported to UAB Hospital for treatment. The 42-year-old died from his gunshot wounds while at the hospital. The 33-year-old’s injuries are thought to be non-life-threatening.”
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates identified the 42-year-old as Juan Tierney Hall of Tuscaloosa.
According to reports, the 33-year-old male heard a knock at his apartment door and went to answer. When he opened the door, there was a male with a weapon now standing at the neighbor’s door.
Money said the male with the gun fired a shot, striking the 33-year-old, who then retrieved a gun and returned fire.
“The 42-year-old male was struck by the return gunfire and ran from the location,” Money said. “He collapsed in a grassy area nearby. The 33-year-old then called 911 to report the shooting.”
Hoover Police Department responded to the location along with deputies and provided assistance at the scene.
Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
