The Clay City Council announced tonight that the much-debated Pee Wee’s Pawn Shop will not be coming to the city of Clay.
“We’ve been discussing the business license fee for pawnshops,” Councilwoman Becky Johnson said. “We had a pawnshop looking to come into the city of Clay.”
According to the Clay Business License Ordinance, pawnshops are located under Schedule H, which sets a business license fee of $5,000. The city was considering rescheduling pawnshops to a new schedule, which would have lowered the fee, to accommodate the wishes of the Pee Wee’s owners.
“After talking with some of the people who were (part of) the original incorporation of Clay, I was going to make a recommendation that we…leave them in the category they’re in,” Johnson said
.
The council unanimously passed a motion tonight to leave the Business License Ordinance as it is currently written.
“We don’t have to really worry about it now, because they have already rented another space,” Johnson said. “They will not be coming to the city of Clay.”
