Charlene Barnett Thurmond was born in Birmingham the 6th of August, 1947; her death was the 26th of May, 2018, also in Birmingham.
She grew up here, attended Woodlawn High School, Class of 1965, and Jacksonville State University. After a successful career in selling real estate, Charlene decided on pursuing a dream of hers to operate a retail store selling fashionable clothing for women.
The Straw Hat in Trussville was born in 1999. Charlene put all her passion, her flair for fashion, and years of hard work into that business which still operates today. In addition, she was a devoted charter member of the Bible Study Fellowship when it began in Trussville five years ago.
She is survived by her husband, Terry Thurmond, her brother, Henry “Hank” Schild, her daughter, Jennifer Barnett and her husband, Brett Andrews, stepchildren Sarah Austin Thurmond of Birmingham and John Christian Thurmond of San Francisco, nephew Henry “Trey” Schild, and finally Marco kitty cat “what Momma loved”.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 from 12 pm until 1 pm at First united Methodist Church of Trussville, 120 Chalkville Road North, Trussville 35173 with the ceremony following at 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers or any other memorial gift, please make a donation to the First United Methodist Church of Trussville Building Fund at the same address.
She was a tiny woman with the footprints of a giant-both on the earth and in the hearts of all who knew her.
